DJ Tony Badea aka "Boom Boom”Chicago DJ / Producer / Video Editor / Motion Graphic Artist
Tony was born in Chicago's Southside Pilsen neighborhood. At a young age, his family moved to Ponce, Puerto Rico and later to San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico. While living on the Island, his love for music flourished. Surprisingly, not by the Salsa music which, was at a fever pitch in the Island, but by Jibaro music (local Mountain music). His idols during that time, were Ramito, Luisito, El Gallito de Manati, leaders in the genre. The sound of El Cuatro (Puerto Rican string instrument) inspired and filled Tony with the hope of one day becoming a Cuatro playing superstar.
Once the family moved back to Chicago in 1979, they settled in the West Town neighborhood (Chicago Ave and Wood St) and later to the neighborhood of Humbolt Park. His cousin Louie Rivera a popular DJ at the time, introduced him to dance music, and how to blend, phase and double up records. Soon after, Tony's dream of Cuatro superstardom was replaced by a turntable (SL1600) (SL1900) (SL1200MKII). He listened to the top disco/dance radio station at the time WDAI and was hooked instantly. The new genre with artists like The Gibson Brothers, Kurtis Blow, Modern Romance, Chaz Jankel, Sharon Brown, The Gap Band and, Rocker's Revenge soon joined his beloved Jibaro music.
In the early 80s, Tony met Harv Roman a fellow DJ who was happy to borrow his speakers but, didn't want Tony to accompany them to the gig. He later became Tony’s biggest fan and most importantly his best friend. Harv and Charlie Martinez promoted Tony and helped develop and guide him throughout the 80s and early 90s.
In 1981 Tony like thousands in Chicago, would record his DJ idols on WBMX, DJs like Ralphi "The Razz" Rosario and Mickey "Mixin" Oliver. Before learning what editing was, Tony would try to replicate the fast mixing he heard on the radio, in the process developing a unique style of his own, he called "Speed Mixing", stacking records as many as 50-70 at a time, for his unique 30-minute sets. The previous DJ generation would mock his record stacking technique as "not good for the vinyl, you'll scratch your records that way" With the help of Harv Roman, Tony was able to showcase his abilities on stations like WCRX 88.1 FM (Juan Tovar), WCYC 88.7 FM and later 90.5 FM (Harv Roman) and WJPC AM (). Mickey Oliver was instrumental in Tony’s DJ career by providing him his first major radio break as a guest on the legendary WBMX's "SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE AIN' NO JIVE CHICAGO DANCE PARTY" mix show in 1984 and later on WGCI.
In the 90s Julian "Jumpin" Perez gave Tony the opportunity to showcase his skills during a Sunday mix show on B96 called "Street Flavor.” Later Tony turned his attention to Remixing and Producing with the Chicago Label, Music Plant.
NOTE: As the 1990s came to a close, Tony decided to pursue other creative opportunities, such as Graphic Design, Motion Graphics Animation (Telly Award Winner) and Video Editing (Telly Award Winner).
Throughout the 80s and 90s, Tony had the honor of DJing alongside legends like Kool Rock Steady, Frankie Knuckles, Bad Boy Bill, The Hot Mix 5, B96 Mixmasters, Supreme DJ Team, Super Elite DJ Team, Tyree Cooper, Fast Eddie, Bear WHO?, Dj Sneak, Tim Schommer, Pumpin' Pete, Steve Santoyo, and Terry Hunter just to name a few.
“Passion and hard work can only get you so far, there has to be someone willing to give me a chance. I want to thank those who gave me that opportunity: My family, Harv Roman, Mickey Oliver, Charlie Martinez, Julian Perez, Zeze, Sunset Records, Matt Warren, Tony Bitoy, Georgie Porgie, Eric Brown, Ivan Robles (PR), Mitch (PR) my cousin Louie Rivera, Terry Hunter, Juan Tovar, Marc Goldman (Pronto Printing) Roberto C for driving me everywhere and many more, but most importantly everyone who enjoyed my mixes.”
